The Season for Giving

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Now is the time much of the world celebrates Christmas and New Years, my family are no exception. It's the season for giving and for making goals and resolutions.

Looking back at this year, I've been very fortunate. I'm finally graduating and out finding my place in the tech industry and have gravitated strongly towards Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).

Open Source is all about giving. Software that is provided in its entirety (including source code) to be used and distributed freely. In fact open source projects only survive thanks to the efforts of volunteers and generous benefactors around the world contributing their time and resources to make the projects better for everyone. All users can benefit from any and all advancements made!

But sadly, there really is no such thing as a free lunch. The websites that provide free and open knowledge still have to pay their hosting fees like everyone else. There are often infrastructure costs, services such as mailing lists, code repositories, bug tracking systems, web servers, and continuous integration servers. Even event promotion and hosting and education efforts. It all adds up.

Just a small donation goes a long way for any of these very worthy causes:

The Linux Foundation

All these organisations have had a positive impact in my life thus far and require nothing in return - but this is the season for giving! These holidays I'll be contributing in code and currency. I hope that you might consider giving back too. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year :)
